Our Top 5 Energy Saving Tips from the Big Energy Saving Week

Last week was the Big Energy Saving Week – a UK awareness event showing you how to check, switch and save on your electricity, gas and water at home.

We’ve summarised our top 5 tips from the Big Energy Saving Week below to help you understand and make savings on your energy.

 

1. Warm Homes Discount

You can get up to £140 off your electricity bill this winter (between September and March) under the Government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme. This discount can also be used on your gas bill instead if you have the same supplier for both gas and electricity.

To be eligible for the discount you must either:

  • Get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
  • Or you’re on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the discount.

If you use a pre-payment meter you can still qualify for the discount. Contact your current supplier and ask them for more information on the Warm Homes Discount.

 

2. Anglian Water 80% discount

If your water bill amount is nearly as much as your disposable income, you may be eligible for the Lite Tariff with Anglian Water. This tariff offers up to an 80% discount on your water bill.

3. Switch and save

Taking a look outside the “big 6” energy companies could save you money. If you are online already, it couldn’t be simpler to view other energy company tariffs. Citizens Advice has an energy comparison website, which is quick and easy to compare your current energy provider with others. Visit – energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk.

 

4. Priority Services Register

The Priority Services Register is a free service provided by suppliers to people in need. By being on this register you may be able to:

  • Get advance notice when there are planned power cuts near you
  • Get priority support in an emergency
  • Have a nominated person such as a family member or carer look after your account statements and bills
  • Relocate a pre-payment meter if you are unable to access it safely to top it up
  • Provide account information in a more accessible format like larger print or braille.

You can sign up to the Priority Services Register if you:

  • Are of pensionable age
  • Are disabled or chronically sick
  • Have a long-term medical condition
  • Have a hearing or visual impairment or additional communication need
  • Are in a vulnerable situation.

5. Smart Meters

If you’re on a tight budget, a smart meter could make life a little easier. The smart meter shows you how much your energy is costing you at the time when you are using your appliance. You can then adjust your usage and budget for the amount that will be due.

You can contact your energy supplier about getting a smart meter at no extra cost.
